NIGHT OF THE LIVING DRUM
Steve Smith & Brian Melvin
The Great American Music Hall, San Francisco
Jan 23, 1997

"Night of the living drum" by Steve Smith (ex-drummer from Journey) and Brian Melvin. I heard that Brian used to play with Jaco Pastorius before. But I'm not sure about that.

The show started at 8 p.m. with the Indian musicians. Two guys played many kind of Indian percussions. I was not surprised because I'm familiar with Indian music. It's close to Thai music in some way.

After a short break, The Zoo played some jazz tunes with Brian Melvin on drums. This band used a lot of modern instruments that some of them I have never seen before. This band had 2 drummers & a keyboard player.

Short break : a jazz band with a keyboard player, Melvin on drums, a guitar player (this guy was very good), a double bass player (he is the oldest in the band about over 45).

Short break : Steve Smith showed his improvisations from some of the old drummer, such as Buddy Rich and others. His drumming was very very great...I like the way he helt the drum sticks...kinda traditional way. He played both of jazz & rock drums. He also did throw the drum stick but he dropped it, and he laughed himself. He's kind of nice guy. After he played for each song he did explain the songs he wanted to play next.

Short break : a jazz band, all are percussion players, also good.

The concert was over around midnight. It was worth it, in my opinion. I have never seen Steve Smith with Journey before. But this was something different from what he has done with Journey. Maybe more into stuff he has done withthe Vital Information.
