I went to the show with friends who never heard any of Gong or Melting Euphoria's music before.
Melting Euphoria is a Bay Area prog / psychedelic band, similar to Ozric Tentacles and Gong. Melting Euphoria started about 8:30 p.m. They played most of the songs from "Beyond The Maybe Machine" album. There was some problem with the keyboard system. There was no keyboard sound on the first half of the first song that's really important. They played about 1 hour, then everyone except the keyboard player left the stage.
I think Melting Euphoria was pretty good at live. They could do better if they did some sound check before the show. And the sound engineer had nowhere to be seen when they really needed him.
The hall was almost full when Gong started. Everybody stood up and yelled when Daevid came out and dressed up with weird costumes. I was very impressed. I really like Pierre, the drummer, the guitarist (forget his name)....Pierre ruled!!!! He hit the drums so hard. They had the female singer who I forget the name but I guess she sings with Gong for a long time. Maybe she is with Mother Gong i'm not sure.
The guitarist reminded me a lot of Steve Hillage playing style. Gong played a lot of old songs from the trilogy album, Flying Teapot, you and Angel's Egg, and some songs from Shamal and Expresso.....and more I can't recall. Daevid changed the costumes almost eevery song and he made people laugh a lot. He looked really funny though. Too skinny.....
Gong put on a pretty long show. They finished around 11:30 p.m. We were too happy with the show. It was worth it.
I have an idea that Gong plays live a lot better than the album. I don't know how to explain this....but it's very good when you see what they play and sing. It's like a show. and you can understand songs a lot better than listen to the albums at home.
They had some stuff for sell at the show....t-shirts, cd's, pins, postcards.....
I bought only the Camembert Electrique" t-shirt.
