THE TREY GUNN BAND
Justice League, San Francisco
January 20, 1998

Here is my review of the Trey Gunn Band live at the Justice League club in San Francisco.

The opening act was Michael Manring solo bass. He started with "Smell like teen spirit" by Nirvana. He did a great job. His bass looked strange to me. I did not know what it's called though. Sorry about that. He showed some solo bass for a couple songs and the last song he played some tune from Jaco Pastorius. That's very cool! Manring played about 45 mins and then left the stage.

We waited for half an hour to see the Trey Gunn band. They started about 10:50 p.m. with "Dziban" from "The Third Star", then "Kaffaljidhma" (my most favourite song) and many songs from the third star album that I can't recall the names. They might play some songs from "Ten Thousand Years", but I can remember. They also played some new track and a woman in the back asked for the name of that track and Trey said "what would you like it to be called?", hmm.......

ENCORE

They came back with "Sirrah" from "The Third Star". That's really awesome! I liked to see Chris cunning soloing his warr guitar that's awesome. His playing was so emotive. Everyone in the band really matched to one another. I liked the drummer, Bob Muller played it hard and fast. He also played tablas as well.

This was the first time I saw the warr guitars so close (I was in the front row). It's so cool and it looked like it's hard to play. You might have to have big hands and long fingers. They only used the 8-string warr guitars for this show but Trey used the 12-string warr guitar in the album. I forgot to ask him about how come he did not use it at live.

If you have a change to see them, please do not hesitate.

Everyone in the band was very nice especially Trey. He said that the Projeket 2 (Trey Gunn/Robert Fripp/Adrian Belew) would tour in the U.S. soon and would play sometimes in March in San Francisco. He said that he already did the trey Gunn Band shows in the east coast in the last spring. The next show of the band is in Portland in Jan 23.

I had my "The Third Star" and "Ten Thousand Years" cd's autographed by all Trey, Tony and Bob and I got...

1). Chris Cunningham - Stories to play (This is the warr guitar player of the Trey Gunn band, he plays the warr guitar in the bass range most of the times. It's from Lunchbox records, Canada.) Chris is awesome when he plays the warr guitar. He really feels with it.
2). Tony Geballe - Native of the rain (This is the guitar player of the band. This cd was released by DGM.) I like Tony's style, his playing atthe show is similar to Fripp.) This cd is pretty short, just 38:20 minute long.

I also had these 2 cds autographed by them. I did not have my ticket back because the Justice League did not give the tickets back to anyone and they ran out of tickets. They had to use something else to replace the tickets.
